3D Printing

3D Printer

We have a Dremel 3D40 3D printer at our library! You can print your own 3D designs or print out a project you found online! Curious about our printer and the process? Here are some frequently asked questions:

Can I make my own 3D design?

If you're a beginner and looking for a great place to start try out TinkerCad. It’s a free online software that teaches you the basics of building in 3D.  The website is TinkerCad.com and all you need to start is an email address no download required and you can use it anywhere. If you are more comfortable with 3D modelling there are programs such as: AutoCADBlenderLeopolyMeshmixer, and Sketchup.

Can I Print 3D Designs I Find Online?

Yes you can! Thingiverse is a great place to find designs others in the 3D design community have posted for free. There are others that have both free and paid for models as well such as: Cults3DMyMiniFactory, and Pinshape. Just make sure the file you find is available in STL format for printing.

Is There Anything I Can’t Print?

The Coaldale Library reserves the right to review and approve (or reject) 3D model files for printing based on, but not limited to, the following criteria:

a. The object is unsuitable for our libraries 3D printer (non-manifold geometry, exceeds printer dimensions, etc).

b. Any object that is a weapon (in whole or in part) or drug paraphernalia is not permitted. Recognizable cosplay props will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

c. The Coaldale Library 3D printing service is primarily offered in a non-commercial capacity, prioritizing equitable access. If you require a large number of copies of an object, we may refer you to a commercial printer.

How Big Can I Print Something?

Our printer has a max build volume of 25.4cm x 15.2cm x 17.0 cm. If you would like to print something bigger, we ask that you split the object up as we can not split models for patrons.

How Much Does it Cost to Print?

Printing with our PLA filament is relatively inexpensive. We do have a $1.00 set up and then it is 10 cents per gram of material used, this does include supports if your projects needs them. We will also be requiring a 50% deposit before we print.

Can I Print in Multiple Colors?

Our printer can only print in a single color per object, though we do have color options available on our form, PLA filament is very easy to paint over if you would like to do that as well.

How Long Does it Take to Print a Project?

3D printing can take anywhere from one hour to one day depending on the size of the project and how many pieces there are. After you have submitted your form we will contact you with an estimate of how long your project will take.

What Happens After my Project is Done?

Once your project is done, we will send you and email letting you know that it is available for pick up with the final price as well. We only accept cash or debit for payment, though we do require a 5 dollar minimum for debit. If you do not pick up your item within 14 days the item will become property of The Coaldale Library, and future prints may be denied.
